Shine Your Light Mural

As part of the We Bring Light project, we have created a large-scale mural on Belgrave Rd, called Shine Your Light. Belgrave Road sits at the heart of the festival, and is where thousands of people have gathered each year for the Diwali lights switch-on, which started in 1983, 42 years ago.

This mural is a landmark, keeping the spirit of Diwali alive for present and future generations. The design was inspired by all the festival stories and memories we gathered from people within the Belgrave community.

Created and designed by artist Shiraaz Ali, the bold and colourful mural combines heritage and modern identity. The artwork shows the passing on of the Diwali festival from one generation to another. The tigers are a symbol of the community’s courage, strength, power and protection. The lotus symbolises resilience, growth and inner peace, and the message ‘Shine Your Light’ reminds people to share their unique gifts with the world.

As part of our access provisions for We Bring Light, we commissioned Meera Patel to create an audio description of the Shine Your Light mural. This audio description takes listeners into the sensory world of the artwork, poetically and visually describing the intricate details that are part of this large scale mural. You can read the description here.
